STOP & GO RIDES AGAIN,

screening  stop-motion work by visual artists and filmmakers

Curated by San Francisco filmmaker and visual artist Sarah Klein, Stop & Go Rides Again follows a tremendously successful European and American tour of the stop-motion animation series Stop & Go. Catch a diverse collection of stop-motion animations by local and international artists as they unveil their most recent experiments in animation and comment on everything from the simple beauty of a rubber ball to the history of evolution. In these films, the artists and filmmakers delve into the labor-intensive process of stop-motion animation by manipulating everyday materials by hand—such as colored paper, photographs, toys, cardboard, fabric scraps and even facial hair—to create optical experiences, cardboard creatures, shadow puppets, and a handy how-to on making homemade hooch.

Highlights in the Stop & Go Rides Again program include:

Kathy Aoki’s futuristic commercial to the mortuary temple of midriff in The Gwen Stefani Grand Burial Exhibition Trailer.

Sculptor Paz de la Calzada and photographer Michael Rauner collaborate on an enticing landscape of animated murals in Tenderloin Dreamscapes.

Ara Peterson explores pattern and motion by creating an immersive optical illusion in 12 Ball.

Recent Guggenheim/YouTube Play winner Evelien Lohbeck confuses reality and illusion in her piece Candle.

Tucker Nichols offers tempting tidbits about his studio practice in an animated document called How to Install the Sculpture.

Melinda Stone & Sam Sharkey team up and engage the audience with their sing-a-long urban homesteading video on the process of making Dandelion Wine.

Stop & Go Rides Again

Welcome to the second installment of Stop & Go, a program for established filmmakers and visual artists to unveil their most recent experiments in stop-motion animation. These pieces, whether created using traditional stop-motion techniques, time-lapse or software manipulation, capture both the sense of invention as well as their instrinstically hand-made qualities. Sourcing drawings, photos, sculptures, puppets and paintings, these animators take their building blocks and propel them on a timeline and in turn create magical worlds.
